If
your Auburn residence or business is more than 50 years old, please check
the water service where it comes into your building and compare it to the one on
display at the Board of Public Works to determine if you have a lead service
line.
If your line appears to be lead, please notify the Board of Pubic Works
(BPW).
Please note the property owner owns the water line between the curb stop (or shut-off) and your home or business. There is no lead in Auburn’s source water and, to the best of BPW’s knowledge, there are no lead components in the water mains.
BPW
has been testing lead in tap water according to EPA regulations since 1993 and
all tests have passed EPA standards; however, only a small percentage of
customer locations have been tested.
If you have copper piping in your home or business, unless your home was built after 1983, it may contain lead solder. If you do the following, BPW believes the lead and copper in your tap water will always stay below EPA limits, even if you have a lead service line. In the morning, before you take your first drink of water, make coffee, etc., run the water for one minute. Any time you draw drinking water during the day, run the water for 10 seconds before filling your glass. Do not drink or cook with soft water or hot water. If you have a water softener, use a dedicated water faucet for drinking, not a single handle faucet with hot softened water.
