2001 TVP Program Awards

The Board of Public Works (BPW) received a TVP (Turbine Verification Program) Award Plaque, which was announced at a special TVP luncheon during the AWEA Windpower 2001 Conference in Washington, D.C.

These plaques were issued to host utilities representing the four 2001 “graduates” of DOE-EPRI (Department of Energy-Electric Power Research Institute) Wind Turbine Verification Program.

According to Dr. Charles R. McGowin, Area Manager, Renewable Energy Manager of EPRI, in the view of EPRI, DOE and NREL, the Nebraska project has far exceeded the original objectives of the TVP Program.

Background

BPW is participating in the Nebraska Distributed Wind Generation Project. Two 750 KW wind driven generators were installed in 1998 near Springview, NE. At the time of installation, they were the largest commercial wind turbines in the United States.

Customer Survey

From our customer surveys, 189 customers said they were willing to pay more (some as much as 20%) for electricity produced by renewable energy. Of course, not all customers answered the survey. More of BPW customers believe BPW should spend a portion of electric revenues to investigate or purchase renewables than those that believe BPW should not.

Renewable Energy

Approximately 20% of BPW's energy is produced by renewables in the form of wind energy and hydro-power from Western Area Power Administration (WAPA).
