The Utilities are owned and controlled by the citizens of Auburn and, because they are not-for-profit, all the economic benefits produced at home stay at home. Local control gives the customers an active voice in policies affecting rates, service and operation. The BPW is in charge of the water system, including maintenance of 182 fire hydrants. All usage except fire protection is metered. BPW reads all water meters every month to help customers control leaks. (Some utilities read water meters every two or three month.) Eleven wells can deliver up to 1,728,000 gallons per day of high quality, filtered, disinfected, and fluoridated water to all Auburn residences. Tight soil formations yield extremely pure water. The water system continues to meet all state and federal regulations.
